. a bleak tone from some in congress sunday on reaching a deal with the white house to avoid the fiscal cliff. president obama and congress are on christmas vacation. it will be thursday before talks resume to try and prevent automatic tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect january first. andrew spencer has the latest. analysts say many shoppers haven't been in the holiday spirit when it comes to spending money. the four-day black friday weekend that started on thanksgiving was strong. sales rose 2-point-7 percent. but analysts says sales fell 4-point-3 percent for the week ending december 15th. and last week they forecasted holiday spending to decrease another 2-point- 5 percent. previous expectations were for a 3-point-3 percent increase in spending. the saint anthony foundation needs help to reach its goal of collecting 5-hundred hams during the 25th annual curbside donation drive. according to the foundation, they collected a hundred hams. that's just 20-percent of their goal. the foundation hoped to get another 400 hams sunday and today. if you would like to donate a ham yo

of the white house in the showdown is you can't compromise as it is currently constituted. obama made the point over and over again and basically laid it out there $250,000. i want the bush tax rates to disappear. i want to use it as a referendum on that, and quote, his words, break the fever and went in to the negotiations after winning by four points. 332 electoral votes. if he ever had a mandate, the bush tax cuts go away and a baseline and don't be afraid to go over the cliff if you believe in the 250. $250,000, face it, $800 billion in revenue over 2 years and now 450 and cutting it to 370 over 10 years and sending messages to republicans he doesn't fully appreciate still when he has a good hand. what he had coming in to this, the demands $$250,000. up to $400,000. take the debt ceiling out of the table. the republicans look at this, can look at this and say we kind of squeezed him down to the bare minimum, the bare minimum in terms of a debt ceiling. we have the debt ceiling expiring in a month and not going to negotiate over the debt ceiling. he just did. it's out of the deal and we can

that is most antagonistic toward president obama. i think he got 30% + of white men to vote for him. he was down in those categories, but white men are the heart and soul of it. you say he is the most divisive. i think we live in very divisive times in terms of our politics, in terms of our media spending it is highly polarized here in the congress. people who do not want to compromise see compromise as a dirty word and are worried they are threatened by the other side spending the whole idea of politics having to see good in the other side and were there is possibility of common ground has gone away. i do not think you are wrong in saying that president obama's era is one of the most divisive in american history and i question whether or not he has a divisive personality. i think his approval ratings in terms of -- he is close to 50%. personally, there are lots of americans including white men who like him, but they do not like his policy. the economic policies in particular tend to be highly divisive in america at this moment. host: part of his speech talked about his hopes going forw
